A domain name is an easy-to-remember collection of words we use to navigate towards a particular website via a DNS server. Typically, they look something like example.com or letshost.ie which then make up part of the whole URL (www.letshost.ie).
This is a much easier thing to remember and type into address bars than an IP address (which can be 12 digits long) which is what makes domain names so useful.
Before you can use a domain name you will need to register it. The domain name registry ensures there are no duplicates, so two websites can never be the same.
Anyone can register a domain name, providing it hasn’t been registered already. Bear in mind that some location specific domains, such as .ie or .eu have specific conditions that need to be met prior to registration.
Your initial domain registration fee will last a year (or more if you choose) and ensures nobody else can use your domain name. If you want to continue after that you’ll need to pay a renewal fee for every year you want your domain name registered.
Otherwise, costs depend on the domain type. Some domains are less than €5 per year while others can cost over €200!
First, you need to do a domain check using our simple domain search tool. That’ll show you what options are available for your domain name. Then simply select the one you want and continue your application.
Before searching for your new domain name, jot down some options in case your first preference is not available.
Not much! If you want to register a standard domain name, you’ll need to know what you want (try our domain search) and then a payment method.
If you’re after a location-specific domain (.ie for example), you’ll need to provide some identification/documentation. We’ll ask for everything we need at the time of your application
Primarily, domain registration ensures that nobody else can use that domain name. Once you have this alongside domain hosting you can publish your website.
Because you registered your domain name with LetsHost you’ll also get some great benefits. Our customers get an easy-to-use control panel, free DNS hosting and access to local customer support.
A domain name is required for people to find your website. Think of it as a home address – if you don’t have an address to give visitors, they’ll never find your house…or in this case, your website!
Domain name pricing varies depending on the type of domain (.COM, .IE, .CO.UK). You will pay an initial registration fee to cover the first year (or multiple years). A renewal fee will then be payable for each further year you wish to register your domain. You can also register upfront for up to 10 years!
The only fee you need to pay to LetsHost as a domain only customer is your registration and renewal fee. LetsHost don’t impose any hidden charges for standard actions such as DNS changes or EPP key requests
Most non .IE domains are registered in seconds whereas .IE domains require a little extra verification before they are registered in your name. Don’t worry though, .IE domains are reserved in your name once we receive payment and your order has been accepted. The domain is then reserved for you for up to 27 days to allow time to send us the required information. Most .IE domains are fully registered within 24 hours.
In most cases registering one domain should suffice but if you have a new business idea or wish to protect a brand or product name abroad, you should register the domain in as many domain extensions as possible.
Registering a .IE is much more straight forward than it used to be in the past. Now, you just need to show your connection to Ireland – the most common ways are by providing a CRO number or a copy of your ID. Contact our Sales Team if you have any questions here.
If you have a domain with another provider you can move it to LetsHost so we bill you annually for its registration. Speak to our team who will guide you through the process.
